Small bird (approximately 17 cm or 6.5 in) very similar physically to the Barn Swallow. Back of black colour with bluish reflections, belly area of dirty white colour with orange sides and clear lines. The most characteristic features are the nape and the face of orange colour. Long, black forked tail, long pointed wings with orange tones in the lower part.

Where it lives

Areas with Mediterranean vegetation, forests, grasslands, scrublands and pastures. It nests in rocky areas and especially under bridges and underpasses of roads. Also in abandoned rural buildings.

How it lives

African summer species that begins to breed in April in Malaga. In recent years, wintering specimens have been observed in the coast. It makes two annual layings of 4 to 5 eggs. Very peculiar nest, unmistakable, like an upside down igloo, made of mud and with a small entrance tunnel. It feeds on flying insects.

Where it can be seen in Malaga

It is a more frequent species than it seems but it is often confused with the Barn Swallow if attention is not paid. In the Great Path it can be watched in stages 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 18, 22, 24 and 27.

Curious facts

The Latin name of the Red-Rumped Swallow refers to its Asian origin, the Dauria region, a mountainous area near Mongolia and the Russian lake Baikal. Because of its habit of making nests under bridges, it is linked to the streams of clean water.
