Very small (about 10 cm or 4 in) and elusive bird. Compact appearance, large head compared to the body and short tail, almost always raised. Rufous plumage, darker in the upperparts. Marked cream eyebrow. Fine and slightly curved bill.

Where it lives

The Wren is a bird of edge scrubs, weeds, reeds, brambles and hedges. It lives in mixed and riparian woods with plenty of understory. Also in parks and gardens with dense shrubs.

How it lives

Resident in Malaga all year round. It breeds from April to July. Two annual layings of 5 to 7 eggs. The males are polygamous. It feeds on small insects (mosquitoes, mayflies, larvae, spiders).

Where it can be seen in Malaga

It is a common and frequent bird throughout the province. It can be watched in almost all stages of the Great Path.

Curious facts

Wrens are very restless birds. If they feel in danger or are excited, they raise their tails at an angle of 90º. They are usually seen only a few moments as they quickly hide among the intricate weeds of the hedges. Very powerful, melodious and characteristic song.
