Small bird (about 12 cm or 4.5 in). Both sexes present a plumage of brown or rufous tones with lighter areas. On that plumage they exhibit a colourful pattern of white, black and yellow bands on the wings and on the face. In the head they show a very characteristic red mask (absent in juveniles).

Where it lives

Present in a wide variety of habitats, preferably in warm areas where trees and open spaces are mixed. Boundaries of forests, crops, olive groves, pastures, wastelands, parks and gardens.

How it lives

Very popular and present bird in Malaga all year round. It breeds in April, making two or three annual layings of 4 to 6 reddish eggs, and forms mixed flocks, especially in winter. This goldfinch feeds on seeds and buds and catches small insects during the breeding season.

Abundant and common species in the whole province and that can be watched in all the stages of the Great Path.

Curious facts

The "colorines" (popular name in Malaga for goldfinches) are also very flamboyant for their singing, which is one of the most frequent sounds of rural spring in Malaga.
