Small and slender bird (about 13 cm or 5 in), with plumage of greyish tones in general and a distinctive black cap. In the females the plumage tones are more brown and the cap is brown. It lacks red eye-ring.
Woodland environments
The Eurasian Blackcap is a woodland species present in humid forests with plenty of understory, especially in holm and Portuguese oak woods. It also appears in pine woods, gardens and parks with shrubs.
Bird resident all year round in Malaga. It starts breeding in April and makes two annual layings of 4 to 6 eggs. This blackcap feeds on small invertebrates and in autumn and winter of berries and a great variety of fruits (blackberries, mastic, figs...).
Common and frequent bird in all the Great Path.
All warblers are forest birds, closely linked to bushes and shrubland. They belong to the genus Sylvia, Latin name that refers to the Roman goddess of the forests. In Latin it literally means "native of the forests".
