Small bird (about 15 cm or 6 in), sturdy and with a strong bill, similar to a sparrow but green. Upperparts of homogeneous green colour, with yellow spots on the shoulder, wings and tail. Underparts of a lighter green and yellow tone. More discreet females, of more muted tones. In flight large yellow spots on the wings can be seen.
Scrubland and Woodland environment
Species with broad preferences. Open forests of pine, quercus and fruit trees or farmlands (almond, olive, citrus, vineyards), areas of scrub with scattered trees and stubble and herbaceous crops. Frequent in fruit trees, orchards, parks and gardens and urban environments. Less abundant but also present in mountain areas up to 2,000 metres above sea level.
Bird resident all year round in the province. It breeds between March and August. Three annual layings of 4 to 6 eggs. Nest in trees. It feeds on seeds and fleshy fruits and in spring completes its diet with insects.
Frequent and abundant bird in the province, easy to observe at any point and stage of the Great Path, with the exception perhaps of very closed forest stands.
Chloris was a Greek nymph, goddess of flowers, known as "the green one". It is to her that this bird owes its name, the one with the greenest plumage of all the finches. Despite the problems of illegal hunting, herbicides and phytosanitaries it is an expanding bird, probably because of its ability to adapt to live in humanized environments.
