Little dense mixed forests and agricultural countryside. To breed it preferably chooses olive groves and fruit orchards. Present also in parks and gardens.
Resident species in the province all year round. It starts breeding in March, with two annual layings of 3 to 5 eggs. Nest in trees. Granivorous feeding: seeds, buds and herbs, complementing the diet with insects during the breeding season and with fleshy fruits in autumn. Gregarious habits in winter. Present in mixed bands with linnets, goldfinches and greenfinches.
It is a common and frequent bird throughout the Great Path.
European serins or "chamarices", as they are known in Malaga, are one of the first birds that announce the spring. The picture of a serin perched on a wire or on top of the tree canopy, exhibiting its colourful green and yellow plumage and its characteristic song, is typical of the Malaga countryside.
