Small bird (approx 16 cm or 6.5 in) with a striking white spot on the shoulder and wings, very visible in flight. Males with ventral plumage, breast and cheeks in salmon colour, blue-grey nape, and small black band on the forehead. Back also salmon. Females with plumage of more muted and brown tones. Less marked blue-grey colour on forehead and nape.

Where it lives

Forest species that occupies dense and open wooded masses. Present also in parks and gardens, wooded urban areas and bushes and crops and boundaries with trees, even if dispersed. In the spring they occupy the wooded areas and in winter they explore more the fallow and stubble fields.

How it lives

Species resident in the province all year round. It breeds from March. Two annual layings of 3 to 6 eggs. Nest in trees. Granivore. Feeding based on seeds, buds and fleshy fruits, complemented with insects during the breeding season. Gregarious, it forms flocks from summer until spring.

Very common and frequent bird throughout the Great Path.

Finches are songbirds with great musical gifts. But it is believed that these gifts are not innate, but that the chicks have the ability to learn from their parents' talent.
