Small bird (about 13 cm or 5 in) and very restless, with a grey head, white eye-ring, grey-brown upperparts, ocher-pink underparts and white throat. Similar females but with a rufous head.

Where it lives

Species of grassland mosaics and dry, arid underbrush and scrub. Typical of beds of thyme and gorse.

How it lives

Summer bird in Malaga and also present in migratory passage. It starts breeding at the end of March making from two to three anual layings of 2 to 5 eggs. Nest in thickets almost at ground level. It feeds on insects and complements its diet with seeds and fruits.

Where it can be seen in Malaga

Scarce bird in the province and hard to see. It is usually present in stages 9, 18, 22, 23, 29 of the Great Path. In the period of migratory passage it also appears on the beaches of stages 30 and 31.

Curious facts

ts Latin name (S. conspicillata) refers to the conspicillum, as does its name in English (spectacled warbler). That is, to the fact that it is a "warbler with glasses" in relation to the white eye rings that distinguishes it from other warblers.
