Medium-sized wader (about 33 cm or 13 in) and larger than other birds of this type. Grey upperparts with darker wings. Clear and mottled breast. White belly and neck. Long, greenish-grey legs. Long bill and slightly upturned, black at the tip and greenish at the base. In flight the white rump (final part of the back) in the shape of a wedge and the barred tail can be observed.
Wetlands
Coastal and littoral species that during its wintering period is also present on the shores of freshwater and saltwater lagoons.
Present in Malaga during its wintering season and in migratory passage. The Common Greenshank breeds in the north of Europe in April. Nest in clearings and edges of coastal forests. One laying of 3 to 4 eggs. It feeds on small invertebrates found in the silt and also on small fish.
It can be watched in the mouths of the Guadalhorce and Vélez rivers, as well as in the Fuente de Piedra and Campillos lagoons.
Easier to observe in the migratory passage, always flying in small groups along the littoral zone.
